San Teodoro (Santu Diadòru in Gallurese) is a Municipality of 4,020 inhabitants, in the historical region of Gallura and it arises in the inland area at the foot of Mount Nieddu (960 m.).
Its name stems from the presence of the parish church entitled to San Teodoro of Amasea, a western Roman soldier, martyr of the IV century A.D. During the age of the Giudicati, the current municipal area of San Teodoro was called Offolle and belonged to the Giudicato of Gallura.
The archaeological attestations in the territory prove that it was inhabited during both the Nuragic and the Punic-Roman Age.
San Teodoro’s area is characterized by hills and mountains, humid areas near the shores (worth mentioning is the Lagoon of San Teodoro because of its fauna) and a plain belt adjoining the coastal area 37 Km long: here it is possible to admire the evocative alternation of very long sandy shores with amazing cliffs (among the most renowned beaches: L’Isuledda, Cala d’Ambra, La Cinta, Punta Aldia, Cala Suaraccia, Cala Ginepro).
The village’s economy is mostly based on summer tourism, but agriculture, farming, fishing and food transformation industry employ a great deal of people.
San Teodoro coasts are frequented by a large number of people keen on water sports such as snorkeling, surf, kite-surf and water-skiing. The village is also provided with a golf-court and interesting naturalistic trails suitable to trekking.
In San Teodoro there is the Istituto della Civiltà del Mare (ICIMAR, Sea Civilization Institute) and the Giardino della Macchia Mediterranea (Macchia Mediterranea Garden) near Capo Coda Cavallo.
