Oschiri (in Gallurese Óscari) is a Municipality of 3,587 inhabitants at the foot of the southern slope of Mount Limbara. The main village marks the confine between Gallura and Logudoro.
The territory presents a variegated landscape, since it encloses a part of the Logudoro hills, the plain all around the village and other valleys near the Coghinas affluent rivers, the widest part of Lake Coghinas and a part of Mount Limbara southern slopes.
Oschiri surrounding area is full of archaeological attestations starting from the Nuragic Age (dolmens in Mount Ulia and Domus de Janas) and in its territory there are almost forty Nuraghi available. During the Roman Age a castrum named Lugudonec was built there. In the Middle Age it belonged to the Giudicato di Torres and here the diocese of Nostra Signora di Castro was instituted.
Oschiri bases its economy on agriculture (grains, fruit and olive), bovine and ovine farming; also swine farming is practiced, but it is less common. During the last few decades dairy production, food industry and wood carving have gained an ever growing importance.
Apart from the enchanted naturalistic landscapes very rich in flora and fauna (especially around Lake Coghinas and at the foot of Mount Limbara) and from the above-quoted archaeological attractions, Oschiri offers also some interesting samples of Sacred Art: first of all Nostra Signora di Castro (XII century), seat of the suppressed diocese and the churches of San Demetrio (XII century), San Leonardo (XVI century), San Pietro (XIII century) and Nostra Signora di Otti (XII century).
Oschiri traditional food dish is Panadas, small dough baskets stuffed with meat or green vegetables, which have become the village’s symbol and are cornering a constantly increasing deal of gourmets. A town festival is dedicated to this product and it takes place in August.
