Monti (in Gallurese Mònti) is a Municipality of 2,440 inhabitants, which arises at the southern borders of Gallura. The village dates back to the Middle Age, when it belonged to the Giudicato di Torres.
The territory, set at the foot of Limbara mountain range, is surrounded by wide cork-oak groves and vineyards and it is passed through by some water streams adjoining Lake Coghinas.
From the village it is possible to get easily to the plateau of “S’Ambiddalzu”, characterized by a landscape formed by low bushes and huge granite rocks eroded by the wind.
The fauna is particularly abundant and it is characterized by the presence of deer, boars, mouflons, wild goats, goshawks, hawks and sometimes it is possible to catch sight of s’intulzu, the Sardinian buzzard.
The economy is based on farming, especially on ovine farming and on agriculture, grape growing in primis, that supplies an important local wine producer: it produces valuable wines and a renowned Vermentino.
In the territory of Monti there is plenty of Nuraghi, such as Binza Alvina, Cuncanu, Loru and Pertuncas. Worth mentioning are the churches of San Gavino (XVII century), San Michele (XVIII century) and San Paolo l’Eremita (XIV century), all of them absolutely remarkable by an artistic point of view.
