Calangianus (in Gallurese Caragnani) is a Municipality of about 4,500 inhabitants in the historical region of Gallura.

The village is 518 m. a.s.l., overlooked by Mount Limbara, and surrounded by hills covered with pastures, crops, vineyards, and cork-oaks. Environmental patrimony is valuable because of its mountains, its thick woods and its short water streams. Along the wildest pathways it is possible to run into a great deal of rare flora (age-old olive trees) and fauna (foxes, boars, hares, birds of prey).

The territory of Calangianus is told to have been inhabited since the Prehistory, during the Copper Age, as it is attested by an abundant archaeological retrieval. However, the first known reference to the toponym dates back to the Middle Age, in 1162: a bull by Pope Alexander III from that period mentions the chapel Santi Jacobi de Calegnano. In the vicinity of the village there is plenty of Nuraghi (Agnu, Casteddu and Budas are the most important). Worth mentioning are also the nuragic fount of Li Paladini and the Giants’ Grave of Pascaredda.

The very heart of this Municipality is surely the monumental compound formed by the three baroque churches of Santa Giusta (XVII century), Santa Croce (XVII century) and Madonna del Rosario (XVII century), overlooking the striking square in the village centre.

All around the village, agriculture (grains, fruit- and grape-growing) and farming (ovine, bovine, caprine) are profusely practiced; economy, however, is mainly based on cork harvest and production. Calangianus has always been regarded as “the cork capital” because of its production of corks, insulating material and a huge amount of stuff for other use. With regard to crafts, cork is processed in order to create elegant and precious handiworks exported all over the world (household items). This Municipality hosts the school “Istituto Industriale per l’Artigianato Nicolò Ferracciu”, the sole cork vocational school in Italy.
