City of Budoni
Budoni (in Gallurese Budòni) is a Municipality of 4,812 inhabitants. It belonged to the Province of Nuoro but it has recently switched to the Province of Olbia Tempio after a referendum. It is set on a flat country partially covered with ponds, situated among the hills within an area bordered by San Teodoro and Posada on one side and by the sea on the other side.
In Budoni both Gallurese and Logudorese are spoken, for this village represents the boundary line between the two linguistic domains.
The village we know today has recently developed, first inhabited by shepherds coming from the inland areas and looking for new pastures for their herds. That slow migration gave first life to several hill hamlets and then to a coastal urbanization. From that moment on, a rapid development of the Municipality occurred, carried away by an increasing tourist flow attracted by the beauty of the shores, characterized by the alternation of its cliffs and its long sand beaches, and made even more charming by the presence of flourishing pine-woods and ponds, within a unique and valuable ecosystem.
Economy, as already pointed out, is based on tourism, on agriculture (especially grape growing) and sheep farming. Very important is the production of sheep and goat cheese in the local dairy.
In the territory of Budoni, traces of the Roman Age are available, especially in the area of Agrustos, where there once was the port Augustus Populus.
Budoni countryside is characterized by the presence of several rural churches and chapels which were used by shepherds as gathering points and burial places.
