Berchidda (in Sardinian Belchidda, in Gallurese Bilchidda) is a Municipality of 2,963 inhabitants in the Province of Olbia-Tempio. It is 300 m. a.s.l. at the foot of the Limbara range.

Berchidda’s territory is divided into two parts: the mountain area, covered with Macchia Mediterranea and woods, is partially exploited for farming activities; the valley is passed through by some streams coming down from Mt. Limbara, that flow into the River Coghinas, put to use in agriculture and farming. The environment is characterized by a huge presence of granite and a lot of valuable naturalistic views; there’s plenty of eroded big rocks forming out-and-out grottos, used in the past as burial places, dwellings and shelters for pets.

Today’s town dates back to the Middle Age and belonged to the Giudicato di Torres, but the territory keeps intact some oldest historical attestations, such as the Nuraghi of Castia, Culumeddu, Mandras, Mannu, San Michele, Su Peddiu, where a lot of finds were retrieved in the past.

Berchidda’s economy developed thanks to farming and milk transformation, with renowned cheese production (Peretta, Pecorino Romano), and to grape growing and to high-quality wine making, like the valuable Vermentino DOC and DOCG. Cork processing is important, too.

The Museum of Wine and the outbuilding of the Enoteca Regionale have been recently instituted as a meeting point for gourmets and tourists looking for the genuine flavours of this territory.

Amongst the historical buildings, worth mentioning are the churches of San Sebastiano (XV century) and San Marco (XIII century). The Castle of Montacuto is a few minutes far from the village; it was built during the XI century by the Giudici of Torres.

During the last few years, an interesting tourist-cultural stream has increased, thanks to the “Time in Jazz” festival ideated and encouraged by the famous Berchidda trumpeter Paolo Fresu.
