Aglientu (in Gallurese Santu Francìscu d’Aglièntu) is a Municipality of 1,175 inhabitants in the Province of Olbia – Tempio, in the historical region of Gallura. It is situated in the inland area, few kilometres far from sea, 420 mts a.s.l. upon granite hills.
Within the territory several kilometres of coastal landscape full of inlets and white shores are included: worth mentioning are Monti Russu, Rena Maiore and Vignola, all of them overlooking a limpid crystal-clear sea.
Toponym “Aglientu” is difficult to trace back. The village dates at about a century ago, but during the Nuragic Age it was inhabited for sure, as it can be inferred by the several nuraghi in the territory. During the Roman Age, it was passed through by a street joining Olbia to Porto Torres, passing through Santa Teresa di Gallura.
San Francesco church with its majestic bell tower lies in the village centre surrounded by an awesome piazza: it was built between 1774 and 1776 by Vittorio Amedeo III command.
Economy is mainly based on swimming season tourism, but agriculture is practiced, too. Handmade pasta, cakes and bread production are also important.
The shores within this area have been declared Sites of Community Importance.
